What weight of linen do you need?
Lighter linen, roughly 130 to 160 gsm, suits gathered dresses, wide sleeves and anything you want to move. Mid-weight, around 170 to 200 gsm, is the safe choice for shirts, trousers and shift dresses. Heavier than that reads as jacket, tote or upholstery. Each listing states the actual gsm rather than a vague label.
How much to order
A short-sleeved shirt takes about two yards at 54 inches wide, a simple dress two and a half to three, wide-leg trousers about two and a quarter. Add a quarter yard for shrinkage and a little more if the print has a direction you want to match.
Living with linen
Linen creases and that is the point. Wash warm, tumble low or line dry, press while faintly damp. It softens every wash without losing its structure, and colorful linen tends to settle a shade quieter after the first cycle.

- Yes. Order two yards and it arrives as one continuous two-yard cut, not two separate yards.
- Should I prewash linen before sewing?
- Prewash and dry exactly the way you plan to launder the finished piece. Linen shrinks most in its first wash, and shrinking it before you cut saves the garment.
