Woven versus printed labels
A woven label carries its design in the threads, so it survives washing and wearing without cracking or fading the way a printed label eventually does. It also sits softer against skin, which matters at a neckline.
Where to sew them
Center back neck is traditional, caught in the neckline finish. Inside a side seam is quieter and kinder against skin. On a bag, an outside seam or the top of a pocket is easy to see. Fold-over labels go into a seam. Flat labels get stitched down on all four sides.
Finishing
Stitch flat labels with a short straight stitch just inside the edge, or a small slip stitch by hand where you do not want stitching to show on the right side. Press before sewing, not after, if the label has a fold.
Questions
- Can woven labels go through the wash?
- Yes. They are woven rather than printed, so the design is structural and survives normal laundering.
- Are these sew-in or iron-on?
- Sew-in. Iron-on adhesive eventually lifts at the corners. Stitching does not.
