What the listings tell you
- Yarn shows fiber content, weight and, where the maker supplies it, yardage per skein.
- Roving and raw fiber are sold by weight, with the breed or blend named where it is known.
- Looms and hoops list their working size so you can check a design will fit before you buy.
- Dye lots vary. If you need several skeins from one lot, ask before ordering and we will check stock.
Starting out
Hand embroidery and frame weaving need very little equipment: a hoop or loom, a needle, floss or yarn and a ground cloth. Kits gather those pieces into one box if you would rather not choose each part yourself.
Questions people ask
- How do I choose a yarn weight?
- Work backward from the pattern. Patterns state a weight such as fingering, DK, worsted or bulky along with a gauge. Match the weight first, then knit a gauge swatch to confirm your tension before starting.
- What is wool roving used for?
- Roving is combed wool top used for spinning yarn, needle felting and wet felting, and sometimes as weft in weaving. It is sold by weight rather than by length.
- What do I need to start hand embroidery?
- A hoop, embroidery needles, cotton floss, a ground fabric with a stable weave, and scissors. Stabilizer helps on stretchy or loose cloth, and stick-and-stitch sheets let you transfer a design without tracing.
