Interfacing is a layer applied to the wrong side of fabric to give it body and stability. It stays in the garment for good. It is the reason a shirt collar holds its shape instead of flopping, a waistband does not fold over on itself, a buttonhole does not stretch into a slot, and a tote bag stands up. Stabilizer is a different product doing a different job: temporary support that holds fabric still while a machine stitches a dense embroidery design, then gets torn, cut or washed away.
Interfacing is confusing mainly because it varies along three independent axes at once — how it attaches (fusible or sew-in), how it is made (woven, knit or non-woven), and how heavy it is. Once you separate those three questions, choosing becomes straightforward. There is also one rule that resolves most doubt: interfacing should never be heavier than the fabric it supports.
What interfacing does, and where
Interfacing does four things: it adds body, it prevents stretching at points that take strain, it reinforces areas that will be cut into or fastened, and it holds a shape the fabric could not hold alone. Most patterns tell you where to put it; here is what it is doing when they do.
- Collars and collar stands. The most recognisable use. An uninterfaced collar has no roll line and wilts within an hour of wear.
- Cuffs and plackets. Both sides of a button placket, so the buttonholes on one and the buttons on the other both have something to hold onto.
- Waistbands. A waistband is the piece most obviously ruined by skipping this — without interfacing it concertinas the first time you sit down.
- Facings. Neck, armhole and front facings. Interfacing stops the facing edge from stretching and stops it showing through as a soft ridge.
- Buttonholes. Always, in every fabric. A buttonhole in uninterfaced cloth distorts into an oval within a few wearings.
- Pocket openings and welts. Anywhere you cut a slit into fabric and then ask it to stay that shape while a hand goes in and out of it.
- Zip openings, especially in knits. A narrow strip of knit fusible along the zip line keeps the opening from waving.
- Bag panels and bases. This is where the heavy and craft weights live, and where the goal is structure rather than support.
- Hem allowances on soft fabric. A light strip in a rayon or crepe hem gives it enough weight to hang straight.

Fusible or sew-in
Fusible interfacing has heat-activated adhesive dots on one side. You press it on and it bonds. Sew-in has no adhesive and is basted into the seam allowance, held by the seams themselves.
Use fusible when
- The fabric can take a hot iron and steam — most cottons, linens, wools and stable knits.
- You want a crisp result: collars, cuffs, waistbands, plackets, bag panels.
- You want the two layers to behave as one piece, which is nearly always the point in a small detail like a cuff.
- You are working quickly. It is genuinely much faster.
Use sew-in when
- Heat would ruin the fabric — vinyl, faux leather, sequins, metallics, some synthetics, and anything with a pile you would crush, like velvet or corduroy.
- You want softer drape. Adhesive stiffens fabric slightly regardless of the interfacing weight. Sew-in leaves the two layers free to move independently, which is softer.
- The fabric is very textured or loosely woven, so the adhesive has nothing flat to grip and would show through the surface.
- You are tailoring. Hair canvas is sew-in by nature: it is shaped with steam and a tailor’s ham and pad stitched into a lapel, which glue cannot do.
A useful middle option is fusible web — adhesive with no substrate at all, which glues two fabrics together rather than adding structure. It is not interfacing, and using it as though it were produces a stiff, papery result. It belongs in appliqué and hems. Glue, web and hem tape
Woven, knit or non-woven
This is the axis people ignore, and it matters more than weight for how the finished piece feels. The short version: match the interfacing construction to the fabric construction. Woven interfacing on wovens, knit interfacing on knits.
Woven
Grain: Has a grain — cut it on the same grain as your fabric
Hand: Behaves like cloth. Drapes, folds and presses the way fabric does.
Use it for: Shirt collars and cuffs, plackets, waistbands, tailored facings, anything on a woven fabric where you want the interfaced piece to feel like part of the garment.
Avoid on: Knits — it has no stretch, so it locks the fabric and cracks at the boundary.
Knit (tricot / weft insertion)
Grain: Stretches crosswise; weft-insertion is stable lengthwise
Hand: Soft, supple, adds body without stiffness. Moves with the fabric.
Use it for: Anything on jersey or knit fabric, soft tailoring, drapey wovens like rayon and silk that you do not want to stiffen, and stabilising a zip opening in a knit.
Avoid on: Nothing much — it is the most forgiving choice and the one to default to when unsure.
Non-woven
Grain: No grain — cut in any direction, so it is economical
Hand: Papery and crisp. Stable, cheap, and does not fray.
Use it for: Bags, craft projects, boxes, small pieces, pocket welts, buttonhole reinforcement.
Avoid on: Garments you want to drape. It can read as plasticky, and it creases along a fold instead of rolling.
Two details worth knowing. First, woven interfacing has a grain and you should cut it on the same grain as the piece — except on a shirt collar, where cutting the interfacing on the bias gives a much nicer roll. Second, if you can only stock one type, stock knit tricot fusible: it works on knits, it works on wovens, and it adds body without the papery hand that puts people off interfacing in the first place.
Choosing a weight
The rule: the same weight as the fabric, or lighter. Never heavier. Interfacing supports cloth; it is not supposed to be the dominant partner. When you are between two weights, take the lighter — an over-interfaced collar reads as cardboard, and once it is fused there is no going back.

The drape test. Before committing, hold the interfacing and the fabric together over your hand and let them fall. If the interfacing dictates how the pair drapes, it is too heavy. You want the fabric still in charge, only firmer.
How to fuse it properly
Fusing looks trivial and has three real ways to go wrong: the interfacing shifts, the bond never fully sets, or the adhesive comes through to the right side. All three are avoidable.
- Test on a scrap first. Same fabric, same layers. Check the hand, look at the right side for show-through or adhesive speckling, and if the garment will be washed, wash the sample. Five minutes here saves a collar.
- Preshrink woven interfacing. Soak it in warm water and dry it flat. Fusibles can shrink on first wash, and interfacing that shrinks inside a piece of fabric that does not is exactly what bubbling is. Essential for tailoring, worth doing generally.
- Identify the adhesive side. It has visible dots or a faint shine, and feels slightly rough. It goes against the wrong side of the fabric. If you cannot tell, touch a corner with a warm iron on a scrap and see which side tacks — fusing it upside down glues it to your soleplate.
- Set the iron to wool or medium, around 148 °C / 300 °F. Check the packaging: some fusibles want steam, some want a dry iron and a damp press cloth. Always use a press cloth.
- Press, do not iron. Straight down, 10–15 seconds, then lift and move to the next section overlapping the last. Never glide. Gliding drags the interfacing out of position and stretches the fabric under it, and it is the single most common mistake.
- Press again from the fabric side once it has tacked, for a firmer bond through the whole piece.
- Let it cool completely flat. The adhesive bond sets as it cools, not while it is hot. Lifting the piece off the board while warm is why a fuse lifts at the edges three washes later. Leave it alone for a minute.
Trim the interfacing out of the seam allowances where bulk matters — collar points, cuff corners, bag corners. Cut it a couple of millimetres inside the seam line so it gets caught by the stitching but does not add thickness to the turn. This is what makes a collar point come out sharp.
A proper pressing setup — a firm surface, a decent steam iron and a press cloth — makes more difference to interfacing than the brand of interfacing does.
When it goes wrong

Embroidery stabilizers
Stabilizers solve a different problem. Machine embroidery puts thousands of stitches into a small area at speed, and fabric on its own will pull, tunnel and distort under that. The stabilizer holds it still. Unlike interfacing, most of it comes away afterwards.

Getting it right
- Hoop the stabilizer with the fabric. Laying fabric on a hooped stabilizer — “floating” — gives much less support and is only for adhesive stabilizers or genuinely unhoopable items.
- Two light layers beat one heavy one. Doubling a medium cut-away gives more support and stays more flexible than a single heavy sheet.
- Use a topping on anything with pile. Towels, fleece, terry, velvet, chunky knits. Without it, stitches sink into the pile and the design disappears.
- Match stabilizer to stitch density, not just to fabric. A dense fill design on a stable woven can still need cut-away.
- Hand embroidery usually needs none if you are working on a stable woven in a hoop. On fine or stretchy cloth, back it with a lightweight woven fusible or a piece of muslin.

What to keep on the shelf
Interfacing is cheap and awkward to buy mid-project, so a small standing stock is worth having. Four things cover the overwhelming majority of home sewing.
- Medium-weight woven fusible — the default for collars, cuffs, plackets and waistbands on cotton and linen.
- Lightweight knit tricot fusible — for knits, and for drapey wovens like rayon and viscose where a woven would stiffen them. The most versatile single item here.
- Heavyweight or craft non-woven — bag panels, boxes, brims. Bought as needed rather than kept in quantity.
- A roll of fusible bias tape or stay-tape — for stabilising shoulder seams, necklines, zip openings and hems. Small, endlessly useful, and rarely on anyone’s list.
Add sew-in only when a project calls for it, and hair canvas only if you take up tailoring — it is expensive and specific.

Choosing for your next project
Three questions in order. Can the fabric take heat? If yes, fusible. Is the fabric a knit or drapey? If yes, knit tricot. Is the interfacing lighter than the fabric? If not, go lighter. Then test on a scrap and wash the scrap. That is the whole method, and it is right far more often than reading the packaging.
