What makes a fabric forgiving

A stable woven with a bit of body. It does not slide against itself when you pin, does not fray to nothing at the edges, holds a crease when pressed, and shows a straight grain you can find. Mid-weight cotton and cotton linen tick every box.

Harder first fabrics

Slippery satins, anything with a nap or a one-way shine, loose gauzes that shift as you cut, and knits until you have a machine setup you trust. Save those for a later project.

A good first project

A boxy top or camp shirt in two yards of mid-weight cotton linen. Few pieces, no fitting through the waist, and a finished garment you can wear the same week. Buy a half yard extra to practice buttonholes on the project fabric first.

Can I sew clothes with quilting cotton?
Yes, for boxy shapes: camp shirts, simple dresses, aprons. It has little drape, so it looks stiff on anything meant to fall softly.
Do I need a special needle?
A fresh universal 80/12 handles every fabric on this page. Changing the needle every project or two fixes more sewing problems than anything else.
